Assistant Professor- State University of New York, The College at Oneonta
2004 to present

Assistant professor and advisor in dynamic music program teaching courses in music industry, music technology, beat making, drumming and rhythm. Courses taught include: Music In the Market Place, Contemporary Issues in The Music Business, Art Commerce and Consummerism, Music Industry Communications, Drumming & Rhythm, Jam Band and Blues Ensemble. Additional campus wide activities include serving as at large member on the Educational Technology Committee and as instructor in the first year college life seminar.

Instructor- Bergen Community College
2003 to 2004

Instructor to career-change teachers and veteran educators  enrolled in the New Pathways program.  In this 45 hour course, teacher candidates learn about the teaching profession with a focus on planning, preparation, instructional delivery, classroom and school environment and professional Responsibilities.  At the end of the course, candidates are ready for placement in full-time positions at public schools throughout the state of New Jersey.

Adjunct Professor: Ramapo College
2000 to 2004

Original course created to critically analyze the roles played by new and emerging technologies in the marketing, promotion and distribution of recorded music and musical events. Students learn which technologies are at the forefront, how they are being utilized and how they are revolutionizing the recording industry at every level.

We analyze the relationships between artists, record companies, and distribution networks paying special attention to intellectual property and copyright issues and the perceived threat of digital distribution to major recording companies and their dominance in the industry. This course also looks at the implications of these technologies on the film industry, publishing and academia.


Independent Study Advisor: Ramapo College
2000 to 2004

Advisor to students enrolled in the School of Contemporary Arts. Planned and guided independent studies for college students with music business concentration. Selected projects include helping student create viable, real-world marketing plans for their own work as artists, business plans for start-up companies and critical-qualitative review of music Web site design
practices.

July 1998 to 2004

Founding faculty member with tenure. Involved in planning school from the ground up including curriculum development, scheduling, staffing and advisory / guidance. Teacher of Humanities with focus on Social Studies, History, Global Culture and Music. Participant in the Teacher as Researcher program.


Co-founder, Digital Playground:
Hoboken Charter School
July 1998 to present

"The Digital Playground", now in its seventh year of operation, is an interactive digital workshop for music, graphics and multimedia designed to facilitate and document the creative work of young people.  Each year students, along with Joe Pignato and co-founder Michael Cain, compose, perform and record a CD of original music.


Mentor to New Faculty: Hoboken Charter School
July 1999 to 2004

Served as mentor for new teachers enrolled in New Jersey's Alternate Route Certification program providing support with curriculum development, pedagogy, class room management and professional development through regular meetings, observations and evaluations of new and career change teachers.


Guest Lecturer / Speaker:
1995 to present

Mr. Pignato has lectured on music composition, improvisation and the music industry at New York University, Ramapo College, NW Vista College in San Antonio, Texas, Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana and at The Eastman School of Music. He has also spoken or presented at the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas, the CMJ New Music Festival, the International Association of Jazz Educators Convention, the Gavin Convention and the Jazz Times Convention.

Music Industry Executive: 1989-2000

Before becoming a full-time educator and artist, Mr. Pignato held key management positions at N2K Incorporated, BMG Classics, RCA Victor, ECM Records, CMP Records and Latin Percussion. His areas of expertise include e-commerce, digital distribution, consumer marketing, strategic planning, team building, leadership and management. He has successfully led Internet and music ventures ranging from N2K's award winning genre site jazzcentralstation.com to North American marketing campaigns for RCA Victor and BMG Classics.
