I. Perchè, Questi
Sentimenti Vengono Distruggermi! For Solo Soprano Saxophone Written for David Liebman Tentazioni is the Italian word for temptations. This piece deals with the internal uneasiness borne out of two equally appealing desires: on the one hand a desire for the familiar and secure and on the other a desire for that which threatens the familiar. The emotional ferocity of such conflict should remain a constant reference point for the performer throughout the piece. There are three distinct sections to the piece: the first two which are written with a more clear, detailed traditional notation than the third (albeit with ample room for improvisation both as called for and as seen appropriate by the performer) and the third (pictured below) which is an improvisation guided by a graphical network of musical implications and events. Because the piece was written with David Liebman in mind, an improviser of the highest ability, I have intentionally allowed improvisation to play a significant role in its character and form. The three sections are: Section I. is entitled Perchè, questi sentimenti vengono distruggermi! (Because, these feelings are coming to destroy me!) Section II. is entitled Svincolarsi la monotonia di sicurezza (To break through the monotony of security") Section III. is an improvisation entitled Una rete senza titolo (An untitled network). When one breaks away from the monotony of security, titles loose their relevance. This section is set up as a network of musical implications and events. Each cell exists to suggest certain tangible and intangible concepts presented to the performer for interpretation and elaboration.
